<  VAIKOM MAHADEVA TEMPLE

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is located in Vaikom at the northwest part of Kottayam district, Kerala. The temple worships Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is commonly known as ‘Vaikkathappan’ in Vaikom. The devotees believe that if Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, Ettumanor Shiva Temple and Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple are worshipped toghether before noon on the same day, all the wishes will be fulfilled. There is a history behind this belief-Once Kharasura did tapasya to satisfy Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva presented him 3 shiva lingas to worship. He carried the lingas ,one in right hand ,next on left hand and the other on his neck and moved from north to south. Kharasura being tired ,rested on the way. A while later ,he found that he couldn’t pick up the shiva lingas. It is believed that the linga on Kharasura’s right hand was Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, that on left hand was Ettumaanor Shiva Temple and the one carried on his neck was Kaduthuruthy Temple. The distance from Vaikom temple to Ettumaanoor temple is 28 kms and to Kaduthuruthy temple is 14 kms.The Shiva linga was placed in Treta yuga. The door in the west side of the temple was closed permanently during olden days and has not opened yet. It is believed that, Once when a person named Njallal Namboothiri tried to stop the temple rituals by entering through the west door was bit by a snake and killed. Then a voice was heard inside the temple that the west door should be closed forever. Traditional Kerala lunch is provided to all the devotees in the afternoon at the temple.
